What is ETCS?

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a student-centered system based on the workload that the student needs to complete in order to achieve the objectives of the program, which are defined in terms of the knowledge and skills to be acquired.

How has the ECTS evolved?

ECTS was established in 1989 as part of the Erasmus program. It is the only credit system that has been successfully tested and used across Europe. Originally implemented to ensure credit transfer, ECTS has facilitated the academic recognition of study periods abroad and has significantly contributed to enhancing student mobility within Europe. Recently, ECTS has evolved into a credit accumulation system, implemented at institutional, regional, national, and European levels. This is one of the key objectives of the Bologna Declaration of June 1999.

Why introduce ECTS?

ECTS facilitates the reading and comparison of study programs for all students, both local and international. It also facilitates mobility and academic recognition. ECTS helps universities organize and revise their study agreements. The system can be used in the context of diverse programs and teaching methods. It enhances the attractiveness of European higher education for students from other continents.
