The Writing Persona in the Travel Literature This lecture addresses the question of the writing I in the travel literature. Instead of being related directly to the author the writing I is understood as a persona whom s/he creates in the travelogue. Through this persona, the writer wants to communicate about travelling to the reader. The examples of this lecture are derived from the travelogues of British writers who visited Finland in the 19th Century. These travelogues, which are written for instance by Selina Bunbury, Robert Edgar Hughes and Edward Rae, show that their perceptions and judgements are firmly anchored in British culture. Their travelogues tell just as much about British self-perception in the nineteenth century as they do about the country they visit, Finland.
